Gunman Takes Hostages @ Discoveryhq

(went War Room with this, semi-anticipating discussion about Humans-vs-Environment)

First heard about this from DCist and We Love DC. Both are reporting that this is the same guy who was arrested for protesting outside the building in 2008. That time he was throwing money in the air and ranting about Discovery's anti-environment programming.

The "Cool story, bro" factor is that a friend of mine's former tenant works in DiscoveryHQ and is currently with other staffers in a safe zone. Here's hoping this lunatic isn't laden with explosives. And by "lunatic", I mean "completely farking insane". Go read the manifesto.

DCist
James J Lee's manifesto via WLDC
WUSA9 with streaming video

Iranian Google....government Approved, Of Course

My goodness, are we lucky to have been born in the West. Holy moly:

QUOTE

People ask for Divine guidance on life decisions and matters of the heart, so why not on more mundane questions like: What is the capital of Azerbaijan? With its new search engine, dubbed "Ya Haq" (that's "Oh Lord" in Persian), Iran is seeking to take on Google and allow its people a non-Western (read: non-evil) option for online fact-finding.

According to a Sunday article in The Media Line, the service will debut in 2012. Some sources implied that the new site will just be the first step in developing an Iranian intranet that will only allow access to approved sites.

"The discussion began a few years ago and is based on a feeling that the Internet is a Western weapon," Pujan Ziaie, who works in IT for Iran's opposition movement, told The Media Line.

QUOTE

A line of heavily armored American military vehicles, their headlights twinkling in the pre-dawn desert, lumbered past the barbed wire and metal gates marking the border between Iraq and Kuwait early Thursday and rolled into history.

For the troops of the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, it was a moment of relief fraught with symbolism but lightened by the whoops and cheers of soldiers one step closer to going home.
Denis Dillon

QUOTE

Former Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon, who demonstrated political durability despite criticism from opponents that he was sometimes swayed by his own religious beliefs, died early Sunday morning at his home in Rockville Centre, his friend and longtime spokesman Ed Grilli said.

Dillon was 76 years old.

A graduate of Fordham University and Fordham Law School, Dillon was one of the longest-serving district attorneys in the United States - and one of the longest-serving politicians in county, Long Island and state history.

QUOTE

First elected as a Democrat in 1974, Dillon later became a Republican and served until losing re-election in a major upset to Kathleen Rice in 2005.

During his career Dillon, a devout Catholic, came under fire for his anti-abortion views as a right-to-life advocate who also advocated for the rights of fetuses in utero. But Grilli said Dillon saw his anti-abortion stand as "a human rights issue" - and not a religious issue.

Still, some critics thought Dillon should not be biased in his role as DA by his own beliefs. Eventually, Grilli said, it caused Dillion to part with the Democratic Party - and, eventually, become a Republican. But not before Dillon ran for governor in 1986 as nominee of the Right to Life Party.

He finished behind Democrat Mario Cuomo and Westchester County Executive Andrew O'Rourke, a Democrat.

In the early 1990s Dillon was diagnosed with lymphoma, but treatment sent the disease into remission. Grilli said that the disease re-emerged a year or so ago and, after hospitalization for treatments, Dillon returned home - and eventually succumbed to the disease early Sunday morning. He leaves behind his wife, Anne, and daughters Barbara and Alice Marie.

http://www.newsday.com/former-nassau-da-de...-dies-1.2211678

In Newark, A Contract And A City Are Worlds Apart

It's a few days old obviously...

QUOTE

NEWARK — Inside the tall glass atrium of Prudential Center on Tuesday, well-dressed people smiled and congratulated one another for the 17-year, $102 million contract that the Devils handed to Ilya Kovalchuk.

Beyond the security guard at the closed door of the news conference, the midday din of a struggling city could not be heard.

But a block away, over on chaotic Broad Street across from City Hall, about 20 workers picketed and blew whistles. They wore signs, sandwich-board style, that read “Put Newark to Work” and “Living Wages Would Stop Foreclosures in Newark.” The unemployment rate in Newark, New Jersey’s largest city, was estimated at 13.5 percent in May. It was 9.5 percent across the country.

Joe Rizzo, an organizer from the Laborers’ Union, said he had heard something about the Kovalchuk deal. For the Devils, right?

“What gets me a little upset is when you relate it to what’s happening in the real world,” Rizzo said.

The juxtaposition of Kovalchuk’s proposed deal was striking, on the streets and in the headlines. Like the hyper-hyped LeBron James free-agent sweepstakes a couple of weeks earlier, the Kovalchuk announcement felt like an unseemly fantasy diversion amid the rat-a-tat news of unemployment, foreclosures and battered school budgets.

When the Kovalchuk deal was announced Monday, the Web site for The Star-Ledger newspaper (NJ.com) ran side-by-side headlines that highlighted the growing discrepancy between the real world and the sports world.

“N.J. faces $10.5B budget deficit heading into next year,” one read.

“Here are the official numbers on Ilya Kovalchuk’s 17-year, $102 million deal with the Devils,” said the other.

more -- http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/21/sports/h...=1&src=tptw
